I have witnessed changes in veterinary medicine over the years. We now can use high tech options just like we can on humans. Modern vets have so much to learn in school and I find many young vets know extraordinary options but leave school without a true understanding of the tried and true basics which comprise the majority of everyday vet medicine. Dr Katie Felton grew up on a farm and at the same time is an educated modern young vet! She did not specialize because long term relationships with her human and animal clients were a priority for her. I believe her early farm life has sharpened her intuition and pragmatism, she always starts with simplest, least invasive and the most humane options first. For example, my dog seemed to be suffering from a stomach upset, he did not show symptoms of bloat yet she talked me into an X-ray, something did not seem right to her. I'm glad I agreed because my dog had the very beginning of bloat and instead of expensive surgery, he got by with $5.99 Mylanta! Her common sense does not negate all the abundant modern high tech options we now have but it is carefully weighed with an ethical thorough consultation about my animals welfare, my budget, and the long term consequences! Combined with her gentle, compassionate nature and her wonderful melding of the best of old and new veterinary medicine, my dog and I visit her with trust, not anxiety!
