My dog, Scout, is a rescue who came to New York by way of Tennessee. We took her to the vet shortly after adopting her, when we realized she was absolutely terrified of the place. She growled and tried to bite everyone. Dr. Gilbert and his staff were so patient and kind. They took their time during the appointment to not upset Scout with any fast movements. Scout got plenty of treats, and then Dr. Gilbert gave me tips on helping acclimate Scout to the vet. I put his plan in action, and we saw Scout improve with each visit. She went from aggressive and snapping to sitting calmly and begging for treats from everyone in the exam room. We've been back to the vet several times, and Dr. Gilbert and his staff know Scout by name and give her lots of affection every time we visit. The transformation in Scout's behavior on her second visit alone was enough to convince me to keep going to Dr. Gilbert's clinic. We feel like part of a family there!

Dr. Hershman is a caring, loving and compassionate vet She treats you like family, she goes beyond the call of duty for example my westie was dying of liver cancer and it was on a Sunday evening I called her receptionist who contacted her she came to my house and put our precious westie to sleep in the comfort of her own home. Her compassion that evening and always will never be forgotton. she was there for me and my husband at one of the darkest days of our lives. She is a remarkable person and puts animals and their owners before herself. we are very blessed to have her a part of our lives and our new dog that we recently adopted. We would never trust anyone else to treat our pet. Dr. Hershman is one in a million. We love her very much. In closing I would like to mention that she also treats animals and their owners with the utmost caring way possible explaining every detail concerning the animal will stay on the phone or in her office after hours to explain every situation so the owner and most of all pet understands.

Dr. Gilbert has such empathy, understanding and a true interest in not only my furry baby, but my family's well being which makes him a truly rare find. Without his guidance and friendship, many of the difficult choices and decisions we've had to make might have been near impossible. I cannot imagine trusting my family to anyone who would not love all of us as his own. He has played the part of my vet to my dog, my counselor to my fears, and my friend to comfort my pain and grief. He is able to approach care with sensitivity without sensationalism. He tries every angle of solution, investing so much time and research to the betterment of my pet. He goes above and beyond without pause- willing to make home visits, stay longer or later, never rushing or treating us like a number or a dollar. There are no words capable of expressing my trust and utmost gratitude to the man that cares so much for not only my pet, but for me as well. He will forever remain a trusted doctor and friend. He is the most compassionate, most kind, most honest man- which in my heart makes him unequivocally the best of the best and most deserving of this title.

In October 2012, I discovered a pea-size growth on the inner flap of my dog Rocky’s ear. In graduate school in Washington, DC and away from my home base in New York, I took Rocky to a local vet. When the initial tests were inconclusive, my DC-substitute vet recommended complete removal of the growth. I immediately called Dr. Gilbert, my trusted vet more than 250 miles away in NY, and decided to bring Rocky home to see him. Then came Hurricane Sandy. NY was in ruin, and the interstate connecting DC to NY was in shambles. Still, I drove Rocky home the day after Sandy hit, and Dr. Gilbert performed all the pre-surgery tests, albeit in complete darkness and without any electrical power. We scheduled—and rescheduled—Rocky’s surgery every day for the next week and a half, but were still without power. Desperate for the growth to be removed, I drove Rocky back to DC and scheduled her surgery with a vet we had never met before. I was distraught. On Sunday afternoon, mere hours before Rocky’s surgery, I received this text message from Dr. Gilbert: “Power just came on!! You are the first person I am telling.†Rocky and I jumped into the car, high-tailed it back to NY, and Dr. Gilbert performed her surgery the following morning. A year later, I have a beautiful, spirited, and healthy dog. I cannot think of any doctor more deserving of being labeled “the best†than Dr. Gilbert.

After treating my newly adopted Sadie for an infected spay incision, Dr. Kristen warned me that we may have a challenge on our hands. Because Sadie could wrangle out of a cone in 5 seconds flat, Dr. Kristen suggested bringing her in for the next week during the day so they could monitor her to ensure she healed. She let me borrow a BiteNot collar and connected it to a cone, plus wrapped her stomach. Not only did Dr. Kristen concoct a breakout proof protective outfit, she went out of her way to make Sadie feel at ease. They brought a kennel to the front of the vets office and let Sadie stay with them throughout the day, so she wouldnt freak out. At first, Sadie was very untrustworthy of everyone at the vet. By the end of the ordeal, she is best friends with everyone up there, but most of all, Dr. Kristen. Unlike other doctors Ive worked with, I could tell she was invested and really cared about Sadies well being. It was a very tough 2 week healing process, and I can say whole heartedly, that I wouldnt have been able to get through it without Dr. Kristen and everyone else at Meadow Brook. They deserve to win $1000 so they can give that extraordinary love to animals who need it most.
