Sassy was a gorgeous Himalayan cat who must have cost a great deal when her prior owner bought her as a kitten from a breeder – registered, with papers. But after 7 ½ years she was dumped at a kill shelter. The day before she was to be euthanized, a rescue group saved her, and we adopted her. From ages 9 to 16 ¾, Dr. Welsch gave her years of happiness and good health despite challenges like pancreatic insufficiency and diabetes. In one instance, Sassy had an intestinal intussusception only identified by ultrasound. Late at night, the doctor called us for approval for emergency surgery. When she went in she saw that the intestine had twisted and was gangrenous. She wasn’t sure Sassy would survive. With great skill, the doctor cut out the infected section and removed it before any of the poisons could spread. Because of the doctor’s excellent care and attention to detail Sassy came home after a few days. Our house was then set up like a little hospital to administer fluids, give numerous medications, test blood, and give insulin injections. As a result of Dr. Welsch’s skill and dedication, Sassy lived and her near dead pancreas actually came back to life and her diabetes went away. At the end of Sassy’s life Dr. Welsch knew the right time to let her slip away from us with great compassion for Sassy and us. I wish we could attach a photo. She was gorgeous.
