When I saw “My Vet’s the Best National Contest”, I knew that I had to nominate my veterinarian, Dr. Angela Holcombe for the best vet title. My experience with Dr. Holcombe began shortly after my wife and I brought a young boxer puppy named Reese in to our home. Unfortunately, at about six months old, Reese suddenly broke out in hives over his entire body. Hence, I took him to Dr. Holcombe immediately, and she reassured me that this was not life threatening and together we would get to the cause. Dr. Holcombe, asked me several questions about Reese and his daily habits, and with that information she recommended that we perform a blood test to determine if Reese was allergic to anything in his environment. In this case, the results from the lab indicated that Reese was allergic to all kinds of grasses and a variety of trees. Therefore, Dr. Holcombe recommended that we begin an immunotherapy treatment that would involve giving Reese allergy injections. Thankfully, Reese has responded well to the treatment and has had only a few mild recurrences. In closing, this is only one example of how Dr. Holcombe has helped my pets over the years. Lastly, Dr. Holcombe also travels the community on barn calls to help treat horses, goats and other large animals that cannot make it to the clinic for treatment. Finally, Dr. Holcombe and her practice support the Veterinary Care Foundation, K9 Battle Buddies, One Love Animal Rescue, and Coastal Pet Rescue.

In 2011, our beloved 14 year old cat, Max, yelped a haunting, guttural sound and was having trouble walking. I called our Vet. His primary was not in but I was told to come over. As traumatic as the afternoon was, the day turned out to be a blessing; it was the day we met Dr. Arguelles. She saved a life that day; her care, concern, and constant availability during and after led us to decide she was our pet’s best caregiver going forward. In 2012, Max’s 16 yearold body and congenitally damaged heart wore out and we had to put him down. He had a great run and his final days were not as hard on him (or us) because of Dr. Arguelles. She is one of the most caring, knowledgeable doctors (people or pets) I have ever met. In 2013, we adopted two cats (brothers) from a local shelter. During the1st visit with Dr. Arguelles, she informed us that she was opening her own practice miles away. Our reply? “Great! Reston isn’t that far. Will you accept us clients?†Prior to the build out of her office, Dr. Arguelles made house calls; she still does. How many doctors these days do such? I am the son of a surgeon in smalltown in MS. My count is two: Dr. Arguelles and my father. People like them, who ply their professions – simply and only because they want to help others – make the world a better place.
