The experience of bringing our terminally ill dog for consultation with Dr. Kelli Weaver was less than comforting. Without questioning the knowledge and skills of Dr. Weaver’s professional identity, the visit was a marginal approach without any sense of objective. Contacting the clinic for a follow up visit we were told that there’s nothing that can be done and that due to the size of our dog he was a hassle for them, therefore it’s best if we don’t come in at all. The conversation painted a immoral picture of lacking commitment and without any professional standards or rational positivism.
Due to the characterization of the disease it was certain that our dog was showing symptoms of cancer induced anemia. Therefore, we promptly asked for a therapeutic vitamin B-12 shot to stabilize our dog’s condition at the time. Following the injection and a regiment of off-label medications his quality of life improved significantly. He began to walk, eat, play, had regular bowel movements, and occasionally even chased the cat. A week or so after the first vitamin B-12 shot we contacted the vet and hoped to schedule a visit for further management of his anemia. The response was that treating or controlling his anemia was possible with a blood transfusion or continuation of vitamin B-12 injections. However, the staff was unwilling to acknowledge the care. We were provided with an opinion that relieving his normocytic anemia would serve no legitimate purpose since he’s in a dying state from metastatic cancer.
