Please do not go to Tama Vet. Consider an alternative vet, especially for surgery, procedures and if you own elderly animals. Here is my awful experience, that cost my cats life: Last Tuesday I brought my elderly cat to Tama for a minor surgery. Prior to the surgery my cat was doing fine. Running around, eating, drinking - he was a happy boy. What should have been an easy procedure resulted into the most torturous day in my cats life and hell after - and now he is dead. I am heartbroken and feel so guilty that I trusted these people to look after my cat. Instead of showing him compassion and operating on him early - as promised - they let him rot for 7 hours in his cage, because: Oops, they were running late. Instead of calling me and discussing not doing the operation due to dehydration and stress, they lied and told me he was doing fine and that he was just about to go into surgery. After the surgery they informed me they did a local anesthesia (instead full) due to his hyperventilating. So they knew they caused him lots of stress at this point, but went on with the surgery anyway. If they had done the local anesthesia from the start (I asked twice for that but it was denied) and in the morning - my cat wouldnt have suffered and dehydrated. Instead they caused him even more stress. Hours of dehydration and now being conscious in the surgery, having people holding him and pushing him down, send my cat into heart failure over the next days. After the surgery there were no instructions. No recommendation of life saving electrolytes, prescriptions, recommendations… Nothing. They knew he was in an awful state, slapped a cone collar on him and that was it. The person that handed him over didn’t know anything about the surgery, and had to go back inside to check what to tell us. This meant that my suffering animal waited even longer in his cage. They didn’t call to follow up and only prescribed pet-a-lyte and appetite stimulants after calling them twice over the next 2 days. We had to do all the research by ourselves and had to beg for it!! I tried my best to force feed liquids and food into my cat for 2 days - when he couldn’t even lift his head anymore, I didn’t believe anymore that he was “just recovering” and rushed him to the South Bay Animal Hospital. They immediately put him into an oxygen tank and hooked him up on liquids. His sodium level was 166, far beyond the maximum 160. I don’t understand how Tama can call themselves a “hospital” - why wasn’t my animal there in an oxygen tank and hooked up on liquids? The South Bay Animal Hospital did everything in their power to save him. But they couldn’t. I had to put him down. Heartbreaking, especially as he was doing so well before the procedure. I am not sad about the money, the South Bay Animal Hospital isn’t cheap and his in-hospital treatment for 3 days cost over $6000 - I am sad for all the animal owners out there who couldn’t have even afforded that after seeing Tama and already paying $700. At least I could do everything in my power to make my cat suffer less, but I want to warn you that this might happen to you after a visit at Tama, especially if you own an elderly animal. Also, this wasn’t the first incident with Tama. I forgave them for the other problems, and of course now I feel so awful that I didn’t go somewhere different. In Covid times it is easier to go somewhere familiar, but please don’t make my mistake. Go to a vet who doesn’t overbook himself, is organized, compassionate and cares more for the animals than just for the dollars. Especially if a simple procedure could turn into an emergency - bring your animal to a vet where they are better equipped in dealing with such things, maybe a 24/7 Hospitals.

Dr. Tama is an incredible human being with a wonders staff. He takes great pride in his practice, and his work. He goes above and beyond to ensure only the best care is provided to our fur babies (and other fur-less animals). His practice is clean, efficient and very pleasant to work with. He (and his practice) are a great comfort to have while living in the Bay Area.

To be honest, I've never felt so at ease at a doctor's office before. When my kitten Phantom was hurt a few weeks ago, we were prepared for the worst, but Dr. Tama gave us the reassurance that no other vet has provided with his passion and love for animals that I believe is unparalleled. You can really see he cares about his job and each and every one of his animal patients. He is constantly making sure we are informed about every move we take in caring for our beloved pets and it's heartwarming to see a man so dedicated to the well-being of animals that we may tend to call family. There aren't enough words to describe the great hospitality my boyfriend and I received from the friendly staff to the positive Dr. Tama with his booming personality. Every visit here has been informative and has more than relieved us of any of the worries we may have had. Our questions were always answered and we are never left feeling hopeless in any given situation. My kitten has since come out of her surgery with positive results and we're happy to know that we put her in caring hands at the Tama Veterinary Hospital.

Last year our dog Mabel broke out with severe lesions all over her back. We were advised by our local shelter Director that we should take her to the best veterinarian hospital in the Capital Region. It was an expensive trip but we finally found out that she has Cushings Disease. We are treating her with a prescription and she is fine. We are thankful for Dr. Bay's care and concern in treatment of Mabel. We call her the Miracle Dog! When we took her back to her regular veterinarian they called her a miracle. As far as we're concerned, the miracle came from the care we got at Upstate Vet. Specialists. So if you are ever in the Albany, NY area, and need a vet, go to Upstate Vet. Specialists and visit Dr. Bay and Staff.
