Pets Best and NAVTA announce results of latest Why I Love Being a Vet Tech contest in advance of National Veterinary Technician Week

BOISE, Idaho – Pets Best Insurance Services, LLC, a leading U.S. pet insurance agency based in Boise, Idaho, is pleased to announce veterinary technician Anne Marie Kubacz as the winner of the agency’s 2015 Why I Love Being a Vet Tech contest.

The nationwide contest, developed by Pets Best and co-sponsored by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) wraps up in advance of National Veterinary Technician Week (October 11-17) and honors veterinary technicians for their outstanding service and devotion to their profession.

“We enjoyed reading each heartfelt story submitted by vet techs from all over the United States and want to express our appreciation for their tireless efforts,” said Dr. Jack Stephens, founder and director of Pets Best. “The interest this contest generated, gives evidence that these finalists are also appreciated by their communities and by pet owners all over the nation.”

Veterinary technicians entered the contest by submitting personal stories about what they enjoy about their profession. The latest round of the nationwide contest brought in 248 entries, and of these, eight were chosen by a Pets Best panel of fellow veterinary technicians to represent the industry. The eight finalists were:

  • Anne Marie Kubacz of the Animal Medical Center in New York City, NY
  • Alice Rohauer of the Buffalo Zoo in Buffalo, NY
  • Gianna Salvadore of Anthracite Animal Clinic in Ashland, PA
  • Deanna Herfel of the Suburban Animal Clinic in Columbus, OH
  • Kerri Gibilisco of The Pet Clinic in Omaha, NE
  • Regina Sanger of Pets Referral Center in Berkeley, CA
  • Kari Walker of the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado in Englewood, CO
  • Deanne Pawlisch of Midwest Veterinary Dermatology Center in Buffalo Grove, IL

At the contest’s end, a total of 4,325 total votes were cast by pet owners, veterinary staff, community members, and friends and family of the eight finalists from across the U.S. through the Pets Best Facebook page. Kubacz, the contest’s winner (with 1,753 online votes), practices at the Animal Medical Center in New York and serves as a chairwoman for the Irish Setter Club of America. The seven other finalists also received a significant number of votes. Runner-up Alice Rohauer had a total of 1,460 votes.

“Winning this contest is truly one of the highlights of my 41-year career,” said Kubacz. “Many of the notes [I received]—from techs, vets, administrators, vet assistants and support staff as well as the dog fanciers and community—brought tears to my eyes. Believe me, their impact in my life fueled much of what I do at the Animal Medical Center and in my role as the Irish Setter Club of America Health Chair.”

Pets Best is awarding Kubacz a paid trip to NAVC 2016—which includes flights, hotel accommodations, and conference registration—for the January event in Orlando, Florida. All eight finalists will also receive a complimentary one-year NAVTA membership.

NAVTA, founded in 1981, serves as a nationwide organization of veterinary technicians, veterinary technologists and veterinarians, in addition to veterinary assistants, educators and students. The organization was created as a resource for veterinary professionals to provide input on national issues related to their field. The organization is also dedicated to promoting veterinary professions and fostering high standards of care.

Kubacz acknowledges the positive impact the contest is having in the veterinary community. “Veterinary Technology does not get a lot of press as a profession. So thanks to Pets Best Insurance, NAVTA, NAVC and the other seven finalists for getting our profession in the public eye and spreading the word about who we are and what we do,” said Kubacz. “We are ALL winners in that we do what we love every day we go to work.”
