The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suggested that dog owners should be careful about what treats they give their dogs, as a recall of certain treats has been announced due to a salmonella finding.
Dog owners who have Merrick Beef Fillet Squares with a package date saying "best by 111911" in their homes are being told not to feed the treats to their animals to ensure their pets stay in proper dog health, according to USA Today.
Although there have not been any cases of illness, the company found a positive salmonella testing when going through the batch in December, 2009. The FDA is warning that owners who want to instill proper pet care should keep the treats out of reach from animals.
Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever, according to Pet Product News, and the FDA warns that a veterinarian should be contacted if a dog is experiencing any form of these symptoms.
As of January 13, all of the feared contaminated treats were removed from store shelves.
