April 27th is the second annual “Free Feral Cat Spay Day.” Homeless and feral cat populations continue to increase by startling numbers. The hope of creating this special cat spaying day was to make the public more aware of the plight of these homeless cats, which is considered to be a national epidemic. The public understands the importance of spaying and neutering. Check to see if cat insurance plan you consider covers spaying or neutering. Many pet insurance companies offer limited coverage with their wellness plans.

Vets Give Free Cat Spaying and Neutering
This event was launched last year by the Alley Cat Rescue (ACR). ACR’s president, Louise Holton, asked veterinarians to participate by offering at least two free spay or neuters to homeless and/or feral cats. 150 vets participated in the event. In addition to this one-day event, many communities are trying to make this issue more public year round.

Reduce the Feral Cat Population
Feral cats contribute to overpopulation and the public isn’t as tuned into this problem because they don’t hear about it. In the case of feral cats, a program called “trap-neuter-return” or TNR involves humanely trapping the wild cats, having them spayed or neutered and then returning them to their location.

Inspire Other Vets, Shelters and Public Involvement
The hope of this two-year-old program is to raise awareness and not just encourage more vets to participate, but include the community and help fund shelters’ low-cost spay and neuter programs. Positive action combined with the veterinary profession’s caring participants will help spotlight this issue. Many companies that offer insurance for cats are also helping to educate about the feral cat issue. Plan to learn more and help out!

April 11 is National Pet Day

National Pet Day, April 11th, was founded as an act of love by Colleen Paige. Paige is founder of the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network as well as many other national holidays devoted to pets, including National Kids & Pets Day, National Dog Day, and National Cat Day.

National Pet Day is set aside to remember the pets that die in shelters every day (16,000 according to petdayusa.com) due to over-crowding and failure to spay and neuter. Another reason pets end up in shelters is because their owners find themselves unable to pay for pet health care. Many owners don’t know that if they had pet insurance for their beloved pet, relinquishing them to a shelter wouldn’t be necessary.

Prior to founding the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network and the lifesaving pet holidays, Paige worked in animal shelters and also as a paramedic. While working as a paramedic, she found herself distraught with the number of injured animals she would come across that she was unable to help.

If more pet owners would plan ahead and invest in lifelong pet insurance, emergency vet trips for everything from the common cold to an accidental bone break or even cancer would be less devastating. When purchased at a young age, kitten and puppy insurance is more affordable and covers more ailments, before the pet has the opportunity to develop them.

It isn’t easy to create a national holiday. It’s a long process that involves contacting representatives of congress and agenda proposals. It isn’t always easy to own a pet, either. But with some care and planning, the joy and benefits of pet ownership outshines all.

Rescues are a great place to adopt a new pet. They differ from shelters because they are often run by a group of volunteers dedicated to the cause. After adopting a pet from a rescue, it’s a good idea to begin researching pet insurance.

Companies like Pets Best Insurance offer cat and dog insurance which can help with the cost of vet bills.

In most cases, a rescue will not have an actual facility where the pets are kept. The pets are usually fostered in the homes of the volunteers until they can be adopted. Rescues also have a wealth of information when it comes to pet adoption tips.

Rescues will often be geared to a specific type of dog. Some cater to only small or large pets, while others are dedicated to a specific breed.

If you are looking for a specific breed, search for a local rescue. They will be able to offer dogs from a wide variety of backgrounds. Breed specific rescues usually have adult dogs that have been rescued from local shelters or dogs that have been given up by their families.

The dogs that come from rescues will usually be up-to-date on their vaccines. They also usually require spaying and neutering before the adoption to help put an end to the number of unwanted pets.

Due to the fact that the dogs live in foster homes with foster families, they are well adjusted home life. They will likely be house trained and know basic commands. By living in home environments, the personality of the dogs is known. This immensely helps matching the dogs with the right family.
