#1 Reason Cats are Dumped & 12 Ways to Prevent It

Posted on: November 20th, 2012 by

A cat uses its litterbox. There is no arguing against the fact that cats make great pets. They are self-sufficient, affectionate and generally very clean critters.  But what if Frisky stops using the litter box?  That cuddly ball of fur is suddenly not so cute when your carpet and furniture are being used as a toilet! Inappropriate litter box behavior is one of the most common reasons for families to relinquish or re-home their cats.

Any cat that suddenly changes its litter box habits and starts to inappropriately urinate should always be evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure there isn’t an underlying medical problem. Once a medical issue has been ruled out and the problem is deemed behavioral, you might consider some  tips and tricks to help with litter box aversion. (more…)

How to Calm a Hissy Cat

Posted on: November 16th, 2012 by

Hello. I’m Dr. Jane Matheys, from the Cat Doctor Veterinary Hospital and Hotel in Boise, Idaho. I’m here today to answer a question posted on the Pets Best Facebook page.

Yolanda says “I have a 16 year old cat. She shows no signs of slowing down. She’s been kind of high anxiety her entire life, and she doesn’t let anyone hold her, pet her or pick her up but me. Even then I can only do so for a few minutes before she gets hiss-y. I’ve tried the pheromone plug-in, the collar which she scratched and she didn’t like. Is it too late for her to learn to relax and be nice ?”

Four Tips for Treating Your Cat this Holiday Season

Posted on: November 7th, 2012 by

Top tips from a pet insurance company for training your dog.Halloween has come and gone, and that means the rest of the winter holidays will be here before we know it! And holidays aren’t just for humans. Many cats get excited about them, too, especially with all the wonderful aromas of roast turkey, baked ham, and other goodies. Cats will naturally want something special to eat, and many cat owners love to treat their cats to some of the same holiday specialties they indulge in. You don’t want to give kitties people food that might not be good for cat health, of course, but there are ways to safely share seasonal goodies with your cat.

1. Keep it Lean

As a general rule of thumb, what’s healthy for you is more likely to be healthy for your cat too. Avoid fat and stay away from candy. Cats have fewer sweet receptors on their tongues, so most of them don’t have a “sweet tooth” like dogs or people. Although we may like to gorge on KitKat bars and other candy on Halloween, they won’t look too tempting to most felines. Still, it’s important to know that chocolate, grapes and raisins can cause trouble for cats. (more…)

Three Easy Ways to Celebrate Halloween with Your Pets

Posted on: October 23rd, 2012 by

Pet insurance dog Bella is all dressed up and ready for a pet-friendly Halloween party.Halloween is such a fun holiday, it’s only natural we want to share it with our pets. Unfortunately, most traditional Halloween activities aren’t pet-friendly or pet safe. So, what’s a costume-loving pet owner to do? Here are three fun ways you and your pets can celebrate goblins and ghouls this October.

Community Events
Check with your local shelters and pet charities, and you’ll likely find all kinds of pet-friendly Halloween events. From costume contests and photo shoots to parades and parties, they’re safe for pets and typically benefit pet-related causes. If you have a few hours to spare, consider volunteering as a co-host to make the job a little easier for everyone involved.

Special Homemade Treats
Classic Halloween treats like chocolate and raisins are toxic to dogs, so be sure they’re not within reach of your pet. Instead, whip up some homemade healthy treats for your pup. Here’s a delicious peanut butter and pumpkin recipe we love from Allrecipes.com. The dough can be cut into any shape, so get out those Halloween cookie cutters!

Best Chew Toys for Cats

Posted on: October 21st, 2012 by

Hello, I’m Dr. Jane Matheys, from the Cat Doctor Veterinary Hospital and Hotel in Boise, Idaho. Today I’m going to be answering a question on Pet’s Best Facebook page. This one is from Nick and he says, “I have a cat that likes to chew on stuff. Mostly when she’s bored. It’s not so bad as to be a serious problem, but are there any chew toys that are safe for cats?”

Well Nick, most cats aren’t chewers like dogs are, but every once in a while, I do run across a kitty who just really likes to chew on everything. Of course you want to make sure that the things she’s chewing on are not dangerous for her. So make sure you go through your home and really cat- proof it. We don’t want her chewing on things like electrical cords, or certainly things especially like strings, ribbons, anything that has a linear shape, kitties can get into really big trouble if they swallow those and they go into the intestine and get stuck there.
