Hello. I’m Dr. Jane Matheys from The Cat Doctor Veterinary Hospital and Hotel in Boise, Idaho. Today I’ll be answering some questions about general cat health from questions that were posted on Pets Best Insurance Facebook page.

The first one is from Chryssa. She says: “My cats are conditioned to come running for milk when they hear me eating cereal. I recently switched to almond milk, and I’m wondering if I can still let them lick the bowl when I’m done.”

First of all, let me just talk about milk products in general for kitty cats. To digest any of the dairy products, kitties need lactase enzyme, and they don’t make as much of this enzyme as people do. It can upset the kitty’s tummy and especially give them some diarrhea. (more…)

Cat Disease: Hyperthyroidism – Part 3

There are two other treatments available that actually cure the hyperthyroidism.

1. One of the possibilities is surgery to remove one or both of the thyroid lobes that sit right in the neck area about here. Now, this is something that used to be more common before we developed these other treatments. Surgery is not done very often anymore. It is much more invasive, of course. It does mean surgery in kind of a delicate area, and there are, potentially, some complications that can arise from that. (more…)

So there are some options that we have as far as treating the hyperthyroidism.

Most of my clients opt to treat the condition medically. This means giving the kitty an anti-thyroid medication twice a day for the rest of its life. Now, most of the cats do fine on this medication, but, like Marissa’s cat, some of them can get some side effects. Usually, if side effects occur, what we can see is vomiting, not eating well, decreased appetite, oftentimes an itchy rash up around the head, the face, or the neck. Or, like in Marissa’s cat, we can see lethargy too. (more…)

Hello. I’m Dr. Jane Matheys from The Cat Doctor Veterinary Hospital and Hotel in Boise,Idaho. Today I’ll be answering some questions about cat health from questions posted on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page.

I’ve got several questions here about hyperthyroidism in kitties. The first one is from Marissa and she says:  “My cat is 12-years-old and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She got very lethargic from the anti-thyroid medication, even on a very low dose, so we stopped it. She does not like her y/d thyroid food, and if she does eat it, she vomits. Are there any other options?” (more…)

3 Reasons Cats Sleep On Your Head

Hello. I’m Dr. Jane Matheys from The Cat Doctor Veterinary Hospital and Hotel in Boise, Idaho. Today I’ll be answering some questions about cat health from the comments posted our Pets Best Insurance Facebook page.

First one here, Karen asks: “Why does my cat sleep on my head? Otherwise, she’s not overly affectionate.” Well, it’s not quite as unique as you might think, Karen. It is pretty common for people to tell me that their kitties sleep on their head at night.

There are several reasons for this.

1. Nobody knows for sure, but my guess is that most likely the common reason is that cats do it for warmth. People lose most of their body heat through their head, and your kitty can feel that, so they wrap right against your head to get that warmth. Other things? (more…)
